Organizing Small Craft Supplies

I make a lot of jewelry, especially earrings. So I have plenty of tiny little pieces to work with. I want to keep them sorted and organized. With my craft room, I have an entire on-the-table shelving unit that holds all of my small-piece organizers. I also have many of those!

My jewelry supplies include earring hooks and posts in both gold and silver, plenty of different sized tiny rings and lots of beads and crystals to adorn the earrings I craft. I’m one of these people who must keep everything sorted by size color and use.

But, more than that, I like to be able to see and get to all the items I need when I’m crafting. So I like the flat containers with plenty of little bins in each. You may prefer to use small drawer sets or towers of little bins that will all stay closed up until you need to get a piece out.

In deciding which small-piece organizers you want, consider how much you like to sort your craft supplies, how many different items and sizes you have and how you prefer to work. These are all factors that will help you choose the best small-piece craft organizers for you.

Organizing Crafts at Home

Most people do most of their crafting at home. So you need good ways to store your craft supplies. At-home organizers are the answer.

They are typically larger, may have drawers or shelf space. These larger units can sit on a table or desk top, or stand proudly along a wall, but they can also be rolled into a closet or into an unused corner of the room.

Although, I have a room devoted entirely to my crafts, I use rolling carts along with standing furniture. Rolling carts are great for someone like me who enjoys many different types of crafts. I use a rolling cart for each of the many projects I work on. When it’s time to work on a particular craft, I just roll that cart with all it’s supplies over to my work table and I’m ready to go. Everything stays organized and I only store the extras in my standing furniture.

For those of you without a dedicated craft room, you might use the kitchen table for your crafting. In which case, a rolling cart also makes a great way to keep your craft supplies organized. Roll the cart when you are ready to craft and just roll it out of the way when you are finished.

At-home craft supply organizers are ideal whether you have a passion for only one craft or you love many different crafts.

Crafter’s Business Cards

Whether you craft for profit or not, business cards are a good tool to promote what you do.  If you are selling your crafted items on websites like Etsy, eBay or Made It Myself, then you know the value of promoting your business. Especially when people order gift items from you.

I am a perfect example. My daughter ordered a birthday gift for me from an online craft store. She had it sent directly to me and the crafter included her business card. Well, don’t you know I ran right over to check out that shop and ended up ordering several more items from her.

Just that one business card, a simple thing, made her extra money from her shop. If you sell at craft fairs and community fests, then your business cards need to be available there. You are building a business and the more you do to promote it, the better and faster your business will grow.

Even if you don’t sell you crafted items, but make them to give to friends and family, business cards are still a fun way to say: Made with love. It’s one of those special touches that your recipients will appreciate.

Find lots of business card choices here. Remember, too, business cards make a great gift for a crafter you know.

July 25 is Thread the Needle Day

In honor of Thread the Needle Day, on July 25, we are planning to do lots of craft supply organizing in our house. Besides getting our sewing supplies organized, we are also going to get all of our needles under control.

Crochet hooks will be placed in their organizer and by size, so we always know where to find each one. Then we are going to get all of our knitting needles put where they belong. Both the straight needles and the circular ones have a place in our organized craft closets and rooms, so they need to put away from whatever last project we finished.

We have our hand stitching needles of varying sizes to put away, plus our sewing machine needles. Again different sizes and styles for different uses on our machines. Besides those, we also have embroidery and needlepoint needles. All of these have a place to be put away and kept organized.

Thread the Needle Day is one of many whacky holidays that celebrate the world of crafts. March was National Crafts Month, Sewing Machine Day was June 13th, September 15th is Make a Hat Day and November 27th is Pins and Needles Day. So we have plenty of fun excuses to start a new craft project, learn a new crafting technique and get our craft supplies organized.

Handcrafted Mother’s Day Gifts

There is still time to plan something wonderfully craft to give to your mother for Mother’s Day. This year it’s May 13th so you still have some time, but you need to get thinking. Here are some fun and easy suggestions to get you thinking about what you can give to your mother this year.

  • Handmade totebag. If you can sew, you can make your mother a new totebag. Pick out just the right fabric, something she would love and matches her personality. Think about adding some bling to make it more charming for your mother. Add an inside pocket or two so it will be more useful for her.
  • Decorated vest or shirt. Also for those of you who can handle a sewing machine, you can take a plain vest or shirt and add special decorated touches to it. You can purchase embroidered patches from your local hobby store and just sew them on, if you don’t have the ability to embroider yourself. Change the buttons to something that has some pizzazz to it. Add ribbon edging. Even lace, if that matches your mother’s personality.
  • Small framed cross-stitch picture. We have been working with cross-stitch on Organize Craft Supplies and have several fun projects just for gift-giving.
  • Pendant necklace. If you can make jewelry, a simple pendant necklace can be made quickly. Even if you aren’t a jewelry maker, you can still put together a charming necklace. Purchase the supplies at your local hobby or craft shop. Use a pendant that has meaning for your mother, or chose one that matches her personality.
  • Framed Photograph. If you are a photographer, get a special photo of her grandchildren or pet and frame it for her. Pictures are always welcome.
  • Plastic-canvas needlepoint. You can get the kits to make a tissue box cover or a picture frame, or cut the plastic canvas yourself and needlepoint with yarn and a large needle.

These are just some ideas to get you thinking about handcrafted gifts for Mother’s Day. As a crafter, you may have many more. Those wonderful homemade gifts are especially welcome by mothers. They enjoy seeing and appreciating the talents of their children.

Crafty Gifts for Those Crafty Mothers

Mother’s Day is coming soon. This year it’s May 13, so it’s time to figure out a gift for your crafty mother. You can always find something special for her, no matter what kind of crafts she enjoys.

The knitter in our group brought her new specialty tote bag to our latest craft party. It was a birthday gift from her daughter. This tote is the perfect sized for lots of needlework projects. All the supplies she needs for whatever current project she’s working on she carries along right with her. In other words, she is set to craft where ever she goes. Plus this one works great for having at home, too.

Here is that awesome tote bag. I’m sharing this with my grown children. Hints for this Mother’s Day!

Any crafty mother would love to receive a craft supply organizer. Who can’t use another way to keep those many supplies organized? Check out our Craft Supply Organizers and Tote Bags page to find many great selections.

Extra supplies for her favorite craft make appreciated gifts, too. If you mother knits, give her some skeins of her favorite yarn. If she’s a jewelry maker, try an assortment of unique beads or crystals. A new collection of scrapbook papers works wonderful for a scrapbooking mom.
